Creating a table of contents that's SEO-friendly

Question

When I create a table of contents in HTML, using Divi, it works fine, but isn’t recognised as ToC as I’m not using a plug-in, so lowers the “score”. What should I do about this (if anything)?

Answer

This in an interesting one. Without seeing the code, it's hard to say.  I would check your SEO plugin for this feature. The SEO ones I've used do have a Table of contents block/widget, like Yoast and All In One SEO. Though I am surprised that Divi doesn't have one natively.

For your HTML, if you have followed the headings hierarchy and everything has the right markup then it should be fine. I wouldn't worry too much it.

Back to the plugins, if you don't have an SEO one, consider one that just does TOCs. I know people say you shouldn't have too many plugins but it one of those things that has been repeated so many times, it seems like gospel. Bloated and badly coded plugins will have a negative effect. Well-coded, lightweight plugins are completely fine.

What have you used code for instead of a plugin?

Finding a nifty piece of code that saves me having to install a plugin is an amazing feeling - as long as I remember what I did in that area in a year's time! What have you used code for on your site?
